Sustainability & Impact

Our Commitment

At Kilwa Enterprises, sustainability is not an afterthought — it is the foundation of our business strategy.
We understand that mining can only be truly successful when it delivers lasting value to people, the environment, and the economies in which we operate.

Our operations in Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo are governed by one guiding principle:

“To mine responsibly today, for a sustainable Africa tomorrow.”

Through responsible production of copper, cobalt, gold, diamonds, and other metals, we aim to power the global transition to clean energy and sustainable manufacturing, while ensuring that the people of our host countries benefit directly from every ton we produce.

🇿🇲 Sustainability in Zambia: Leading by Example

Empowering Local Communities

Our Zambian operations are anchored in the Copperbelt and North-Western Provinces, regions that have long depended on mining for livelihood. Kilwa’s goal is to redefine that relationship — transforming mining into a driver of inclusive growth.

Key Community Development Initiatives:

  • 🏫 Education & Skills Training
    • Built and rehabilitated 4 schools in Ndola and Kitwe since 2023.
    • Annual Kilwa Bursary Fund sponsors over 120 students in mining, engineering, and business programs at the Copperbelt University and Mukuba University.
    • Vocational centers in Ndola train local youth in welding, heavy-duty mechanics, and mineral sampling.
  • 🏥 Healthcare & Sanitation
    • Partnership with the Ministry of Health to establish the Kilwa Community Health Clinic, serving over 5,000 patients per month.
    • Regular malaria prevention campaigns, supplying treated mosquito nets and sanitation kits.
    • Water purification and borehole drilling projects — 10 boreholes completed since 2024, giving clean water access to more than 8,000 people.
  • 💼 Local Enterprise Development
    • Supplier Empowerment Program (SEP)” trains and finances local SMEs to become Kilwa-certified vendors.
    • Over 45 small businesses in logistics, catering, and equipment maintenance now work directly with Kilwa’s Zambian operations.
    • Launch of Women in Mining Zambia, providing mentorship and seed grants for female entrepreneurs in copperbelt districts.
  • 🌾 Agricultural Diversification
    • In 2025, Kilwa introduced a Community Farm Project near Ndola, converting rehabilitated land into productive farmland supplying maize and vegetables for mine canteens.
    • The initiative employs 80 local families and supports food security in surrounding areas.
Environmental Stewardship

Mining in Zambia’s Copperbelt demands environmental discipline and innovation. Kilwa has implemented a comprehensive Environmental Management System (EMS) aligned with ISO 14001, focusing on reducing emissions, conserving water, and restoring ecosystems.

Environmental Actions & Metrics:

  • 🌿 Land Rehabilitation
    • For every hectare mined, two hectares are restored or re-vegetated.
    • Over 150 hectares rehabilitated since 2023, including green buffer zones and agroforestry belts around the Ndola Hub.
  • 💧 Water Management
    • 92% of process water recycled at the Ndola Refinery through closed-loop systems.
    • Construction of sedimentation ponds to prevent runoff contamination.
    • Partnership with the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) for independent water quality audits.
  • ☀️ Clean Energy Transition
    • Installed 7 MW of solar power at the Ndola Hub, reducing grid dependency by 30%.
    • Electrification of mine vehicles under a pilot “Green Fleet” program, with six electric loaders already in operation.
    • By 2027, Kilwa aims to power 50% of all Zambian operations from renewable sources.
  • ♻️ Waste Reduction
    • Implementation of a zero-tailings policy for new projects — tailings are reprocessed for residual copper and cobalt.
    • Hazardous waste is safely contained, monitored, and disposed of through certified facilities.
    • Partnership with local recyclers to repurpose scrap metal and used oil.
Safety, Health, and Well-being

Safety is the first and last priority in every Kilwa operation. We maintain a “Zero Harm” philosophy — protecting employees, contractors, and communities through prevention, training, and accountability.

Performance Highlights:

  • 0 fatal incidents across Zambian operations since inception.
  • Over 250,000 man-hours worked without lost time injury (LTI) in 2024.
  • Daily safety toolbox talks and digital reporting dashboards.
  • Fully equipped on-site emergency response units and clinics.
  • 100% of staff receive annual occupational health screenings.

Safety Culture:

“Every Life Matters” — our internal program that empowers every employee to stop unsafe work, regardless of rank.

Social Investment Partnerships

Kilwa believes partnerships create deeper, lasting impact. In Zambia, we work hand-in-hand with:

  • Local Government Authorities — for infrastructure planning and road rehabilitation.
  • Copperbelt University & CBU School of Mines — for research and internships.
  • UNDP Zambia — on sustainable mining and gender inclusion programs.
  • Faith-based organizations — for youth empowerment and literacy projects.
  • Environmental NGOs — on tree planting and waste management initiatives.

Signature Project 2025:

Kilwa Enterprises and UNDP Zambia co-launched the “Mine2Market” initiative — an accelerator that supports small-scale miners to formalize operations, access finance, and meet environmental standards.

🇨🇩 Sustainability in the DRC

While Zambia remains our flagship sustainability hub, Kilwa continues to deepen its social footprint in the DRC, particularly in Lualaba, Haut-Katanga, and Kasai Provinces.

  • Community Clinics: 3 permanent and 2 mobile health centers established near Kolwezi and Kilwa sites.
  • Artisanal Support Program: Integrating 200 artisanal miners into formal cooperatives with PPE and fair purchasing agreements.
  • Clean Water Access: Over 12,000 residents in Lualaba now benefit from borehole installations.
  • Diamond Transparency: 100% traceability and Kimberley Process compliance at Lunda Fields.
  • Education: 250 scholarships annually through the “Kilwa Foundation for Youth.”

Governance & Transparency

Kilwa Enterprises operates under a strong governance structure ensuring accountability and ethical conduct.

Governance Framework:

  • Compliance with the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) in both Zambia and DRC.
  • Annual ESG Report published for investors and regulators.
  • Independent environmental and social audits conducted by Bureau Veritas.
  • Strict anti-corruption, AML, and conflict-mineral control policies.
  • Public grievance and community feedback systems available in all project zones.

Ethical Minerals Policy:
All copper, cobalt, and diamonds exported by Kilwa are verified through certified chains of custody — ensuring no material from conflict zones or illegal artisanal sources enters our supply.

Restoring Land and Livelihoods

When mining areas reach closure or transition, Kilwa restores and transforms them for community use.
In Zambia, several decommissioned pits have been converted into:

  • Fish-farming ponds generating alternative income.
  • Agricultural land for maize and groundnut cultivation.
  • Eco-parks serving as green zones for biodiversity regeneration.

By turning mined land into productive landscapes, Kilwa ensures mining leaves behind growth, not scars.

Our Sustainability Philosophy

“Mining should not only extract wealth — it should build nations.”

Kilwa Enterprises embodies a new model of African mining: responsible, transparent, and people-centered.
We see Zambia not just as a mining jurisdiction, but as a partner in building the continent’s sustainable industrial future.
